Dangers to the Flatback Sea Turtle

The Flatback sea turtle is classified as vulnerable, but the Red list of the IUCN notes that it's data deficient and unable to be correctly assessed. As with the other species of sea turtles, it nealy impossible to know the exact number of turtles.A Flatback on the beach
The Flatback Sea TurtleNot only killer whales and sharks are the reasons when you see a turtle who has lost a flipper or are injured. Entanglement in fishing gear can result in serious injuries to the Flatback sea turtle, including severe cuts and necrosis or in worst case death. Entanglement can also lead to death by drowning.
After hatching the small baby turtles are easy prey for many predators, but since the flatback hatchlings are larger than other sea turtle hatchlings, they have a better chance of surviving attacks by crabs, gulls and fish when they leave the nest than hatchlings of other sea turtles. Once they are in the ocean, the turtles become potential prey for octopi, sharks, and other large fish.
