Leatherback | Breeding and Nesting

During the first week in the ocean the internal guidance system becomes active and imprints the place where they were born.
A Leatherback arrives on the beach to nest15 to 20 years after hatching sexual maturity is reached. Every 3-5 years the Leatherback females return to the beach they were hatched on to lay eggs. To ensure better distribution of the genes and increase the survival of the species they mate with a different mate each nesting season.
Even though nesting beaches are limited, the Leatherback has the longest migration of all the sea turtles. Some of the large and critical nesting beaches can be found in Indonesia and Mexico. Other nesting places can be found in Costa Rica, Trinidad, USA, French Guiana, Suriname and a few other places.
Collection information on Leatherback males must take place at sea, since they never return to land after hatching. With the great distances this turtle travel it's very difficult to study it at sea. Therefore most of the available information has been gathered by studying nesting females on beaches.A picture of a Leatherback leaving the beach after nesting
